Moles are very common and the vast majority are harmless and do not have any impact on everyday life or self-image. However, there may be reasons why you may be considering mole removal.
This mole was removed under local anaesthetic straight after consultation. The scar was aligned in her frown lines to conceal it.
What are the reasons for mole removal?
The mole is in a prominent area, for example on your face, and you feel self-conscious or people comment on it.
The mole may be growing rapidly and getting more noticeable.
It may be causing problems with daily life e.g. catching on clothes or jewellery. If it is in the scalp or the beard area, it may be caught when brushing hair or shaving, and either hurting or bleeding.
You may be concerned that the mole is cancerous or may become cancerous in the future.
What are the features of a benign, non-cancerous mole?

Present for many months or years
Growing slowly or there is no change in size
Do not usually bleed or become open and raw (i.e. develop an ulcer)
Round or oval in shape and have a definite edge
Are symmetrical so both sides match in shape and border
Usually have a smooth surface
Tend to be small (typically less than 5mm) but not always so
Can have hairs growing through them
What are the concerning features of a mole?
Some moles may be a type of skin cancer such as melanoma or other types of skin cancer. Things to look out for in skin cancer include:

Mole grows and changes rapidly over weeks or a few months.
Change in colour or includes multiple colours
Has uneven, irregular edges and asymmetrical in shape
Itches or develops a raw surface (ulcer) and oozes or bleeds
Can become large and be bigger than 5mm
How are suspicious cancerous moles treated?
If you are concerned about having skin cancer, you must arrange an urgent appointment with your GP or a private specialised doctor.
They should arrange surgery for removal of the mole and analysis of the area. This allows us to confirm what the mole is and to ensure that the mole has been completely removed.
Further tests and treatment can be planned depending on the results on the analysed area.
Will the NHS remove benign, non-cancerous moles?
Due to the demand on the NHS, benign moles are no longer treated on the NHS. You may be sent to see a specialist to confirm the diagnosis but it is unlikely that the mole is removed.
